SNOMED-CT logo

This is a collaborative project with the National Neurosciences Advisory Group and the Neurological Alliance. Neurology outpatient coding is needed to achieve a better understanding of outpatient activity, in order to support service planning and benchmarking. Opportunities for service redesign and effective healthcare resource utilisation depend on accurate data describing outpatient activity and the nature of conditions seen. The intention is to link a standardised approach for assignment of diagnostic categories by the clinician to SNOMED-CT codes.

Other PhD opportunities

Outpatient neurology services in the UK face overwhelming demand that far outstrips clinical capacity, leading to restricted access and long waiting times for patients. This PhD project is expected to encompass a survey of neurology services in the UK of approaches to outpatient neurology coding, a study using natural language processing to investigate alignment of diagnosis lists (principal working diagnosis and secondary diagnoses and comorbidities) across neuroscience centres in the North West, and pilot testing and implementation of ‘live’ prospective coding.
