Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NIHR portfolio studies

We recruit patients to studies in neurological conditions and stroke. Approaching 1000 patients have been recruited to neuroscience and stroke NIHR portfolio studies so far in 2019-2020, above target and approaching one half of the total target for the Trust. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is a leading recruiter to NIHR portfolio studies in the North West Coast Clinical Research Network. 

The neurosciences research team are based in the Lancashire Clinical Research Facility at the Royal Preston Hospital. The research delivery team works on a wide range of studies, including local and international, commercial and non-commercial with varying levels of complexity. The team of nurses are supported to deliver research by a Clinical Trials Support Officer and to set up studies by the Research Access Team.

The research team works on studies in four main areas: stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, neurosurgery and neurology. This encompasses conditions as varied as intracerebral haemorrhage, migraine, spinal surgery and motor neurone disease. The team works mostly on NIHR portfolio studies and consistently exceed any recruitment targets that are set. The team is proud of the quality of the service they provide and of the care and compassion with which they treat the people who take part in the studies. Patients may be with the team for a one-off visit (in the case of a genetic or questionnaire study) or return for many visits extending over years (for instance, for a pharmaceutical study), but in both cases the team's role is to ensure that the participant is well supported and that their data contribute to the development of neurosciences services for the future.
