Professional Profile
Graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM), Cardiff in 1985 with science and medical degrees. After a period of general hospital training, obtained a post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Basel/ZLF Switzerland studying cellular transport systems, eventually returning to UWCM as a Cellular Pathology Lecturer to complete a PhD in tumour biology and specialist training in both general and neuro- pathology. Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists with dual accreditation since 1997.
Consultant and Head of Neuropathology at the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust since 1999. Clinical Chair in Neuropathology at the University of Central Lancashire and Senior Clinical Lectureship at the University Manchester. Has a research interest in neuro-oncology and is the Trust’s Designated Individual for the HTA research licence since 2007. The CNS Archival Research Tissue Bank is part of the Brain Tumour North West (BTNW.org.uk) research consortium which aims to improve understanding and treatment of brain tumours.
Has held various Royal College and British Neuropathology Society (BNS) offices including Chair of the BNS Professional Affair Committee, Chair of the Royal College of Pathologists Neuropathology Speciality Advisory Committee and President of the BNS (2020-2023).
Research Interests
Research interests cover Neuro-oncology basic science, genetics, diagnostics and therapeutics including Chemosensitivity, Aptamers in diagnosis and treatment, IR Spectroscopy in diagnostics, tissue culture models and tissue banking.
