Adjanie Patabendige
Dr Patabendige is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science and leads the Brain Barriers Research group (https://sites.edgehill.ac.uk/brainbarriers-research/) at Edge Hill University. Her main goal is to improve fundamental knowledge in the mechanisms of disrupted brain barriers and fluids in neurological diseases.
Current research interests
Development and establishment of physiologically-relevant in vitro models
Using a range of in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) models, we aim to understand the detailed cellular and molecular mechanisms of BBB dysfunction in neurological and cardiovascular diseases, including identification of new disease biomarkers.
Understanding the pathophysiology of ischaemic stroke
Investigating the mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of impaired brain fluid homeostasis in ischaemic stroke, including clinical translation and potential treatment strategies to reduce intracranial pressure elevation.
