Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust hosts the regional neurosciences centre, serving a regional population of approximately 1.5 million. It is also the regional provider of interventional stroke treatment, including mechanical thrombectomy. The hospital has a strong track record of recruitment to NIHR portfolio studies in neurosciences, including stroke, with neurosciences as a leading theme, and leading recruiter of patients to studies, for the Trust.

Clinicians lack confidence in ‘high-level’ neurology service data, particularly when these have been generated where there may be a lack of adequate validation.

Using health informatics to improve neurological care

Neurological conditions cause an immense global burden, ranging from the very common headache disorders which affect almost half of the world’s population, to rare but life-limiting disorders such as motor neurone disease. Dementias and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease will increase over the next 1-2 decades, but effective treatments are largely lacking – so there is an enormous need for neuroscience research.
