Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial 2
Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial 2 (ACST-2) is a large international randomised trial comparing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) versus carotid artery stenting (CAS) in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis where there is substantial uncertainty as to which treatment is more appropriate. ACST-2 seeks to compare these procedures and their benefit in stroke prevention.
ACST-2 is currently recruiting patients from over 112 centres in over 20 countries worldwide. The trial is on track to recruit 3600 patients by 2019. This will allow for a meaningful comparison between surgery and stenting in Asymptomatic patients with narrowing in the carotid arteries.
The Royal Preston Hospital (part of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals) has been a recruitment centre for this trial.
Further information about the trial can be found on the ACST-2 website.
