My research encompasses cerebrovascular disease, its interface with other neurological disorders, including neurodegeneration, the role of inflammation and infection, novel mechanisms, therapeutic targets and biomarkers, and the use of routine data. For example, I jointly lead research into vascular changes in Parkinson’s disease using novel MRI techniques – including co-supervision of a PhD recently awarded to a neurology trainee and Lancaster University’s first Academic Clinical Lecturer. We are now collaborating with a national Parkinson’s imaging study. I am involved in related work using MRI and PET in Alzheimer’s disease and have investigated cerebrovascular changes in other settings including late onset epilepsy. Lancaster University’s two other recently appointed NIHR Academic Clinical Fellows in Neurology are working under my supervision. I have supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate trainee projects, leading to their achieving prizes, presentations and publications. The Connected Health Cities (CHC) project (Innovation Agency, Lancaster University, University of Liverpool), is using routine healthcare data to improve clinical care – and I am deputy clinical lead. This work, which includes epilepsy, is attracting interest nationally, with the potential for greater involvement in ‘neurology data’ work nationally.
